My Approach to Self-Disclosure
Many therapists choose not to share personal information with clients, even upon appropriate request, which can create unnecessary tension in the therapeutic relationship. While this can be effective or necessary in certain cases, my approach is slightly different. I maintain a professional and structured environment while being open and more casual. But before deciding on disclosing, I ask myself, "Am I sharing this for me or for my client?"
Purpose of Self-Disclosure
I find sharing appropriate personal information can help clients feel more comfortable and reduce the inherent power differential in the therapeutic relationship. With so much information readily available online, transparency can help clients focus on their healing process rather than seeking out background information. This openness fosters a trusting and collaborative space.
Why Social Work?
My passion for community service and belief that we are only as strong as our most vulnerable community members led me here.
I've always been interested in psychology, people, society, and helping others. Psychology felt too focused on the individual, often expecting individuals, rather than systems or their environment, to change. Anthropology felt impersonal and objectifying, with an expectation to remain a non-intervening observer even when witnessing injustice. Sociology recognized social injustice but stopped short of developing evidence based interventions to promote equity and justice.
Seeking a more holistic approach, social work appeared to be the perfect fit...AND IT WAS! Through a lens of social justice I can understand people (anthropology), analyze the impact of systems (sociology), and focus on emotional health while providing individual treatment (psychology). While I enjoy advocating at individual, organizational, and community levels, my true passion lies in empowering marginalized and disenfranchised folx to find their voice and build the confidence to reclaim stolen spaces or enter spaces where they have not felt included.
